Wetlands

The Farm at Sinking Creek has 64 acres of federally protected wetlands. These gorgeous, marshy wetlands preserve native flora and fauna that form the habitats and ecosystems of this western Virginia valley.

The wetlands are important natural resources that need to be protected not only because of the organisms that call them home but because of the ecosystem services they provide to keep our planet healthy and functioning. Wetlands help by absorbing pollutants, thus improving water quality, providing fish and wildlife habitats, storing floodwaters, and, during dry periods, maintaining the surface water flow of Sinking Creek, which meanders through the pastures and woods of the farm. They enrich biodiversity by providing a diverse habitat for animals and plants.
