Intern Program
At The Farm at Sinking Creek, we believe the development of the agricultural industry begins with hands-on education. Our internship program revolves around challenging students to broaden their understanding of the agricultural industry in a holistic way.
Our program combines aspects of a working equine and cattle farm, including herd management, facility maintenance, record keeping, beef sales/marketing, land stewardship, and overall farm operations. Our interns also gain valuable knowledge of federal, state, and non-profit programs like EQUIP, CREP, and NRCS, as well as the opportunity to work with groups like The Nature Conservancy and The American Chestnut Foundation.
The Farm also provides internship opportunities for liberal arts students. Each summer, the farm offers a fellowship to a Hollins University student that supports art, illustration, creative writing, scientific writing, and environmental sciences that explore nature’s health and people’s well-being. We offer fellowships for self-driven creative projects and the opportunity for input in the development of a field guide for the farm.
Beginning in 2023, The Farm at Sinking Creek teamed with Hollins University to offer the Tracy Frist Prize for Excellence in Imagining Nature recognizing a graduate student whose final project – new play, screenplay, dance project, children’s book, short story, novel or poem collection, lesson plans, or thesis that envision new and creative orientations to natural habitats, permaculture and regenerative agriculture, land management, wildlife management environmental justice, and sustainability.
The Farm has hosted summer interns from colleges around the country, including Hollins University, Auburn University, Colorado State University, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Mississippi State, and more.
