Dogs

The dogs are some of the hardest working and most loved animals at The Farm at Sinking Creek.  Our pack is comprised of three different breeds, each with specific abilities to support the farm and its livestock.

Austrailian Shepherd

Australian Shepherds are renowned for their herding abilities.  Deriving from an ancient breed of herding dog in Europe, what we now know as the Australian Shepherd was perfected in the American West and has been a staple in ranch culture.  At The Farm of Sinking Creek, Australian Shepherds help herd horses, cattle, goats, and chickens.

Anatolian Shepherd

Our livestock guard dog Simon, an Anatolian Shepherd, protects our livestock from predators such as coyotes at night. Anatolian Shepherds derive from an ancient canine bloodline from Turkey dating back to 2000 B.C.  The breed was only exported to other parts of the world in the 20th century and first appeared in the United States in the 1950s.  Specifically bred to guard, this breed is known for its loyalty to its flock.  Since the passing of the Endangered Species Act in 1973, Anatolian Shepherds have played an important role in protecting threatened livestock species.

Border Collie

The newest member of the pack at Sinking Creek is Bonnie, a Border Collie. Bonnie is a working cow and sheep dog at the farm. At just two years old, she has already started competing in dog trials. Border Collies are known for their athleticism and intelligence, making them natural herders. They date back to the beginning of livestock farming in the United Kingdom and were eventually exported worldwide to help manage sheep farms.
